Motocross Stars Set for Gruelling Livingstone Baths 8-Hour Challenge
In a story reminiscent of the movie Cool Runnings, where the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team take on the world, a fearless group of motocross riders is preparing to swap dirt for tarmac as they line up for the 40th running of the iconic Livingstone Baths 8-Hour Endurance Race at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town.
Armed with determination, raw talent and the backing of a loyal group of sponsors, the team will tackle the notoriously demanding karting circuit aboard 150cc road racing machines. The Livingstone Baths 8-Hour is no ordinary race — it is a relentless test of stamina, skill and teamwork, where riders and machines are pushed to their absolute limits for a full eight hours of non-stop action.
Set to take place on Sunday the 14th, the endurance classic forms a major highlight of the Cape Motorsport Festival, an event renowned for its electric atmosphere. Spectators can expect a full day of motorsport excitement complemented by live music, food stalls and multiple racing disciplines, making it a true celebration of racing culture.
The karting circuit at Killarney is famed for its tight layout and unforgiving nature. There is no time to relax, no long straights to recover — just corner after corner demanding precision and focus. Add to that the endurance format, where teams must perform running repairs and lightning-fast pit stops, and the challenge becomes as much about strategy and resilience as outright speed.
Flying the flag for motocross are Caden Weise, Seth Whittington, Kyle Phillips and Breece Romans — a quartet better known for carving up dirt tracks than leaning into tar corners. Weise brings with him some circuit racing experience, having competed in a handful of circuit racing events, while Romans has dipped his toe into circuit racing with just one previous start. For Phillips and Whittington, however, this will be completely uncharted territory, making their participation all the more daring.
Despite their limited circuit experience, the team is no stranger to pressure or physical punishment. Motocross has forged them into tough, adaptable competitors — qualities that could prove invaluable when fatigue sets in and the race reaches its decisive stages.
As the countdown begins to one of South Africa’s most legendary endurance races, all eyes will be on this unlikely band of motocross riders as they take on seasoned circuit specialists in a battle of endurance, heart and sheer determination. One thing is certain — when the flag drops at Killarney, this underdog story promises plenty of drama, excitement and unforgettable racing.
Local Algoa Motorsport Club star Ethan Diener will also be competing, teaming up with Max Munton, Troy Tonkin and Free State rider Arno Erasmus in Mitch Robinson’s Cape based Magworkshop team to form a formidable combination. ... See MoreSee Less
