Close racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway

Round seven of the Algoa Motorsport Club Regional Championship took place in blustery conditions at Aldo Scribante Raceway on Saturday. The day started with high drama during the early morning qualifying sessions when Juan van Rooyen’s much anticipated debut drive in his pristine Lotus 11 ended in flames as the car caught alight in turn one. Luckily the well trained marshals were close at hand and managed to extinguish the fireball in relatively quick time, but sadly the damage to the car was to severe for van Rooyen to continue.

A standout performance from Sutterheim’s Tiaan Coetzer in his immaculately prepared Opel Tigra saw him dominate proceedings in the Regional Modified Saloon class, where he got the better of regular winner Deon Slabbert in his very quick VW Polo GTI, and won three out of three heats. A large field of twenty-three cars Modified Saloons across six different classes had the crowd enthralled with their on-track antics. Dean Ball made a welcome return to the action after a two-year sabbatical and was immediately back on pace in his BMW and got the better of the two VW SuperPolo’s of Ian Riddle and Elan Buchman to win class B while Deon Neethling in his very quick Audi A4 enjoyed a close tussle with Riddle in all three heats setting some very good laps times that will no doubt see him moving up to class B for the next event. 
 
The Wide Horizon Advanced Training Coastal Challenge for historic, classic and retro cars saw some of the closest racing action for a long time with the lead changing from lap to lap. Championship leader Rane Berry in his Nissan Skyline was under massive pressure from Angelique Griffin in her Alfa Romeo Sud Sprint, but as Griffin challenged for the lead in race one a coil wire in the engine came loose, resulting in her retiring from the race. Griffin had set the fastest lap time in the race before her retirement, so was on pole position for race two where her, Tiaan Kleinhans, Tom Hugo, Rane Berry, Shane Fantham and Dion Valentine broke away from the rest of the field and put on a spectacular show of hard, fast racing with the lead changing multiple times. Berry went on to take the win which he then repeated in race three.
 
The visiting Boxer Group Mini Challenge was a highlight of the race day with Dion Valentine in his giant-killing Leyland Mini being the standout performer of the day thrilling the crowd with his skilful driving often drifting the little classic through the corners.
