Winter Oval Track action on the cards at PEOTR

Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway on Mission Road near Greenbushes is hosting Round 8 of their 2023 club championship on Saturday, 26 September, and spectators are certainly in for an action-packed evening. With a little rain forecast during the day, it’s sure to add some added racing drama to the dirt oval racing scene.

The seven classes in action on the night are Rookies, Stock Rods, 1660s, 2.1 Modifieds, Heavy Metals, Hot Rods and American Saloons.

The Rookie class for beginners continues to show encouraging growth, with six entries already being received. The battle for supremacy will no doubt continue between Reghardt Joubert, Quade de Lange and the fast-improving Tyde Geddes. With his car reliability issues now a thing of the past, AJ Groenewald hopes to join the action up front, as will relative newcomers Azriel Aroonslam and Krishka Bothma.
Juan Roesstorff will be out to prove that his recent maiden win in the fast-paced V8 American Saloon Class at Victory Raceway 2 weeks ago wasn’t just a flash in the pan. He will be up against some stiff opposition in the form of Dawid Joubert, who is still getting to grips with his new car.

In the competitive 1660 Modified Class for 4-cylinder motors, Jason Drake has put in some great performances of late, although some bad luck has also come his way. He joins a field of very talented drivers, which includes Tiaan Oliphant, Clinton May, Francois Engelbrecht, Riaan Nel and rising superstar Dawid ‘Baba’ Grundlingh.

Jan van Tonder is in a race against time to get his car repaired so he can partake in the Heavy Metal Class and mix it up with regulars Rayno Barnard, JJ Tolmie, Sakkie Palm, Cornel Victor and the husband and wife pair of Gerhard and Bonita Kotze to name a few.

In the 2.1 Modified four-cylinder class, Zandri de Villiers has had a relatively good return of form as she has now overcome some reliability issues with her car. She will be up against a strong field with the likes of Tyler Mansfield, Clinton May, Neels Vermaak, Branden McPherson and Nandor Kleywegt all in with a chance of overall line honours. Hopefully, Malcolm Els and Daniel Renison will also be making an appearance.

The 1600 Stock Rod class will be an interesting class to watch, and here, Deon Kretzmann will be hoping to carry the form from his recent rally achievements onto the dirt oval circuit where he’ll square up against Ryno Fourie, Clint Claasen and drivers Lisa Vosloo and René van Jaarsveld to name a few.

With free parking available around the circuit, spectators can sit it the warm comfort of their own vehicles to watch the drama on the track unfold. Gates open at 13h00, with racing scheduled to start at 17h00. The cost is R60 per adult, R40 for pensioners and R30 for children aged 6-12.

Missing from the club championship scene this weekend will be top Hot Rod contenders Johan Schoeman, Kelly Dowling and Jethro Schwartz, who will all be making the trip to Bloemfontein to take part in the World of Motorsport ZA (Womza) Dirt Oval Nationals that takes place at the Bloem Oval Raceway on Friday and Saturday.
