Another dose of early morning rain on Saturday, 22 October, did nothing to dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic crowd that turned up to watch the eighth and final round of the 2022 Algoa Motorsport Club Regional Championship at Aldo Scribante Raceway. The full race program included the Boxer Group Challenge for Classic racing Minis that had arrived from all around the country to test their skills on the tight confines of Scribante Raceway as well as showcase their finely tuned cars.
The rain did, however, keep a few of the motorcycle competitors away, but Port Alfred star Oliver McKay stole the show, winning both heats in impressive style on his Yamaha R6. Wayne Molloy bagged second on an identical machine, and Bernard Els took home third on his historic Yamaha TRX.
The overall winner in the CBR 150 motorcycle class was Ashton Heidemann, with Dylan Grobler taking second and Ethan Diener in third. The junior class was won by Grobler, with Diener in second and Ruan van Zyl joining them on the podium. In the Senior Breakfast Run class, Heidemann took the win from Jessica Vermaak, with Rob Halgreen finishing third.
The NSF 100 motorcycle class was dominated by Dylan Grobler, again winning all three heats; Anikilitha Nombana was second, and Kirsty Oberholzer was third.
The Street & Fine Car field was well supported, with a mix of 21 street legal cars pitting themselves against the clock and each other in this handicap class. Dennis Mitchell, in his Birkin S3, walked away with line honours, followed by Peter Schultz in a Supercar and Hedley Whitehead in a Mini Clubman GTS.
The Coastal Challenge Class for historic and classic cars had nineteen entries, and Derek Boy in a Ford Capri Perana triumphed over Ian Oberholzer in his Volvo 850. Aidan Barnard, in an Opel Kadette, finished in third place.
In the Open-top class for sports cars, Quinsley Sale was untouchable in his Ariel Atom, taking both heat wins from Jeandre Marais in his Nardini and Patrick Hanly in a Lotus 7.
The Regional Saloon Class saw 22 cars out on the circuit, and it was the Ariel Atom of Quinsley Sale that walked away with line honours after having finished second to Celso Scribante’s Lamborghini in the first two heats. On the opening lap of the third heat, Scribante lost the back end of the car and ended up on top of the tyre wall bringing a premature end to his day’s racing. Royce Griffin, in his very quick Honda Civic, finished 2nd overall and Steven Phillips, in his VW Golf Mk1, was third.
The Boxer Group Mini Challenge was won by Rory Nositter in his Clubman, with local hero Ian Riddle in a Cooper finishing in second and Stuart Greig in a Cooper 998 taking third place.
The day ended with a 45-minute endurance race where Daniel Bright in his Lotus 7 was once again untouchable, romping home to win from East London visitors Gareth Hewitt in a BMW E36 and Wade Wright in a similar BMW E36.
The next main circuit event will be the PE 3hour Endurance race for cars and the famous PE 200 for motorcycles that will take place on the 25th and 26th of November.
