Team Northfield are tops

A stiff breeze did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm that flowed in abundance on Saturday when the Algoa Kart & Motorcycle Club held their last race meeting of the 2022 Regional & Club Championships.

The premier class of the day was the MSR4-stroke Endurance class, where 26 karts lined up for two 1-hour endurance races where up to four drivers shared the driving duties. Kenzo Barnard and Cameron Kelly from Team Northfield Engineering came out with guns blazing, dominating the first endurance race to take victory by a hefty 38 seconds. The BBS Team of Pieter van Heerden and Johan Labuschagne came home in second place ahead of Dorian Kleynhans and Christopher Dorfling of Team Auto Perfection, who took third place. In the second of the endurance races, it was once again the Northfield Team that triumphed, with BBS once again second and Team Head Office Motorsport in third.

The BBS Team’s Pieter van Heerden won the first 12-lap sprint race. He was followed over the line by Bryan Greenwood of Team Head Office Motorsport, with East London visitor Wade Wright in third.

In the second of the sprint races, the win went to Cameron Kelly of Northfield, with Team BBS again in second and the team of Head Office Motorsport in third.

In the Ladies’ class, the very experienced and talented Melindre Marais dominated proceedings, taking the overall win from DeanĂ© Slabbert in second and Tracy Wilson in third.

Young Abdul-Azeez Aroyewun won all three heats in the Junior 4-stroke class to finish on the top step of the podium, with Evan Coertze in second and Stuart van Tonder third.

The Mini-Rok class went the way of Josh Moore, who took a hattrick of race wins. Caleb Moss took second, Jack Moore in third, Sebastien Blignaut fourth, Aashay Nagura fifth, Aiden Green sixth and Dylan Bezuidenhout in the seventh position.

At the time of writing, the final championship standings still had to be verified but will be updated once confirmation is received.

The season’s final event will be held on the 3 December, when the inaugural Coastal vs Inland Challenge will take place at the Celso Scribante Circuit.
